What Kids Learn from This Activity
This insect prewriting practice printable helps children develop several key skills:
Fine Motor Skills
Tracing lines helps strengthen the small muscles in the hands and fingers. These muscles are crucial for tasks like writing, buttoning, and using scissors. Engaging in this activity regularly can improve hand dexterity.
Pencil Control
Following the paths of the insects requires children to control their pencil movements. This practice enhances their ability to make precise movements, which is important for writing letters and numbers.
Hand-Eye Coordination
As children trace the lines, they coordinate their hand movements with what they see. This hand-eye coordination is essential for writing and other daily tasks. Additional activities like catching a ball or assembling puzzles can also support this skill.

How to Insect Prewriting Practice Printable for Tracing
The reason you need buttons for this prewriting activity is because they are used as ants, and the ants have to walk around the shape to get to the fruit in the insect trap. Let me show you how.
Step 1: Introduce the Activity
Begin by showing the children the printable and pointing out the ants and line shapes. Explain that they will be helping the ants follow their paths by tracing the lines. This sets a fun and engaging context for the activity.
Step 2: Demonstrate Tracing
Place a button on each ant on the shape. Then, one at a time, push the button along the shape to finger trace the lines. This helps build muscle memory of the shape, which will make it easier to trace in the next step. Finger tracing is also excellent for younger preschoolers who can’t trace with a pencil in a traditional sense.

Step 3: Guided Practice
Provide each child with a printable sheet and the buttons. Guide them as they begin finger tracing, offering assistance and encouragement as needed. By placing a button on each ant, the preschooler gets to practice tracing shapes five times, one for each button.
Step 4: Tracing Practice
Use a pencil or marker to demonstrate how to trace one of the lines, starting from the insect and following the path to the end. Emphasize the importance of staying on the line and moving slowly and carefully.
Observe their grip and movement, providing tips to improve control. You can also use the shape tracing cards with a dry erase marker, but pushing the buttons along the shape is more fun.
