Christmas Tree Counting Cards

These free printable counting cards are so versatile for teaching preschoolers early math skills. You can use the cards to teach number order, comparing numbers, and addition.

Your preschoolers will also be working their fine motor skills as they handle the manipulatives. Add in some fun tongs or play tweezers to increase the fine motor rigor opportunity!

Number Order

Use these Christmas tree counting cards to show preschoolers how to sequence numbers in order from least to greatest or greatest to least.

Start by encouraging your preschooler to count out loud while placing the cards in order. Then they can place the correct number of manipulatives under each card to show how the numbers increase or decrease.

Comparing Numbers

You can also use these Christmas tree counting cards to teach comparing numbers.

Have your child select two different counting cards. Then have them place the correct number of manipulatives under each card. Once they’ve finished counting, ask them, “Which tree has more presents under it and which tree has fewer presents under it?”

You may find that you need to teach the terms fewer, more, less, greater, and equal to your preschoolers. This is a great time to use visual comparisons to model how to compare numbers. Begin with big comparisons as it’s easier for young children to compare numbers like 7 and 3 versus 5 and 6.

Preschoolers can also practice adding numbers with these free printable counting cards.

Have your student select two different cards. Then, have them count out all the Christmas presents using the manipulatives and place them in one pile. Next, encourage them to count all the presents to see how many there are all together. Finally, have them identify that number out of the cards.
