Number Recognition and Counting
Children practice recognizing numbers from 1 to 12 while reinforcing their counting skills, specifically one to one correspondence skills. They match numerals with number words, building confidence in early math concepts.

How to Preschool Math Counting Using St. Patrick’s Day Puzzles
Using three-part counting puzzles is a great way to help preschoolers connect numerals, number words, and quantities in a meaningful way. These St. Patrick’s Day number puzzles offer a hands-on approach to developing number sense, counting skills, and problem-solving.
Step 1: Introduce the Concept of Number Matching
Begin by showing the children a completed puzzle and explaining that each number has three matching parts:
- A numeral (e.g., 5)
- The number word (e.g., five)
- A set of objects that represents the number (e.g., five shamrocks or gold coins)
Hold up each piece and ask the class what they notice. Encourage them to count the objects aloud and read the number word if they can.

Step 2: Model How to Complete a Puzzle
Demonstrate how to find the correct pieces and match them together. Say something like, “I see a number 3. Now, I need to find the piece that says ‘three’ and the piece that shows three treats. Let’s count them to be sure.” Model slow, careful matching while explaining your thought process out loud.
Step 3: Engage Students in Hands-On Practice
Give each child or small group a set of puzzle pieces, making sure they are mixed up. Encourage them to find matching sets by looking for the numeral, number word, and the correct group of objects. Walk around and provide guidance as needed. Ask open-ended questions like:
- “How do you know these pieces go together?”
- “What can you do if you’re not sure?”
- “Can you count the objects to check your answer?”

Step 4: Reinforce with Additional Activities
Once children have matched their puzzles, extend the learning with these fun variations:
- Ordering Challenge: Ask students to arrange their completed puzzles in numerical order from 1 to 12.
- Find the Missing Piece: Remove one piece from a puzzle and have students figure out what’s missing.
- Peer Teaching: Pair students up and have them quiz each other by showing one piece and asking what should come next.
- Sensory Bin Search: Hide puzzle pieces in a bin of green rice or gold coins and let children find and assemble them.
