Fall is always one of the most exciting seasons in our preschool, and admittedly, one of the most welcome preschool themes. What better way to fuel that enthusiasm with some awesome fall math and literacy centers?
15 Fall Literacy and Math Centers for Preschoolers
My preschoolers adore autumn. They are so excited and intrigued by the changing season. I think it is because fall is so visual. The bright reds and pinks Zinnias give away into the vivid yellow and oranges of Black-eyed Susans. The maple trees turn a fiery red, while the aspens drying leaves rustle in the wind.
My preschoolers love to jump in those drying leaves, listening to them crackle and crunch under their rain boots.
Where I live, autumn never seems to last long enough, although most years we can enjoy it through the end of November. I think my preschoolers have a sense of how quickly time flies in the fall, so they play a little harder and try to make the days last a little longer before we turn inside for the bitter cold months that follow.
This season calls for the very best fall math and literacy centers I can find for my preschoolers!
Fall Math and Literacy Centers for Preschool
Since my preschoolers are so interested in fall, I figured what better way to get into the spirit of the fall season than with some classroom activities! These activities are perfect for your preschoolers, and you’ll be able to incorporate autumn into your math and literacy lessons.
Fall Word Sensory Bin – This autumn sensory bin features sight words, but they could easily be exchanged for letters, numbers or shapes.
Candy Corn Counting – Make a quick ear of corn out of construction paper and invite your child to practice counting by adding real candy corn! Counting with candies in hand is always a huge hit!
Fall Counting Game – Another fall sensory bin that incorporates number identification and counting!
Pumpkin Counting Game – Who loves pumpkin picking! My preschoolers certainly do. In this counting game, that’s exactly what you get to do!
Autumn Alphabet Puzzle – Match the leaf halves to also match upper and lower case letters. If your preschooler is new to the alphabet, this puzzle is designed so that you can offer smaller sets of letters.
Felt Letter Matching – This fall latter activity helps develop hand strength as children use clothes pins to match leaves.
Letter Matching Tree Activity – Easily one of our favorites, this is an apple themed letter activity where children match red dot stickers (apples) to letters on the tree.
Fall Rebus Story – Rebus stories are an excellent way to teach children print awareness skills. They fill in the blanks by reading the pictures as an adult reads the print.
Pumpkin Patch Letter Matching – Another fun letter matching activity! Here, the children match upper and lower case letters in a pumpkin theme.
Apple Seed Counting – FREE printable! Children use black buttons to practice counting and one-to-one correspondence skills.
Apple Drop Counting – This is another fall favorite. Children actually drop a handful of ten buttons on a FREE printable and then count how many fell on the tree and how many didn’t. This is a great lesson in composing ten.
Letter Sorting Alphabet Tree – Preschoolers love this fall alphabet activity because it is practically life size, as they place leaves on a paper tree bigger than they are!
Beginning Sound Pumpkin Puzzle – These pumpkin alphabet puzzles also include beginning sound pictures as part of the puzzle.
Ten Apples on Top Counting Activity – Children get to use dot markers to blot out the apples as they count them, one on top of the other!
Alphabet Leaf Activity – It’s funny how preschoolers actually like to rake leaves, especially in this letter identification game!
Picture Books About Fall
