FAQ About Teaching Thanksgiving to Preschoolers
Celebrate Thanksgiving the preschool way by including fun games and activities. Include crafts or activities that promote appreciation, gratitude, and teamwork like the first thanksgiving snack. Try a gratitude activity with your preschoolers and help guide them into learning to be thankful.
Discuss the importance of the meaning of Thanksgiving. Help young children learn that this holiday is all about gratitude and celebration of the family and friends who care and help us each and every day.
Encourage children to share what they feel thankful for and find ways to share those feelings with the important people in their own lives. Invite children to share special traditions or games that are special in their families.
Turkeys are such a fun symbol of Thanksgiving and they are ideal for fun hands-on crafts! Try a colorful turkey process art activity or play a silly game of Catch the Turkey! Use beads and work on that hand eye coordination and fine motor skills with a beaded feathers with pipe cleaner Thanksgiving craft.
Thanksgiving Activities for Preschoolers
Kids will love these fun turkey activities for Thanksgiving. Preschoolers and Kindergarteners will both benefit from these educational thanksgiving themed turkey themed activities. Kids learn best from hands on activities, and that’s just what these colorful printables offer.
Turkey Alphabet Matching Puzzles
Match upper and lower case letters in these simple and fun puzzles. The alphabet is randomly divided into sets via the color coded backgrounds, making it easy to split the alphabet into parts to make matching the letter less overwhelming for beginning preschoolers.
Roll-a-Turkey Counting Game
This is a fast paced counting game. Children need not worry about filling in the entire grid. This game is different in that the first player to roll a turkey wins the game!
It could take one roll, or fifteen. You never know! This game comes with two dice to choose from, one that reinforces subitizing and one that reinforces number identification.
Turkey Visual Discrimination Game
Visual discrimination, even with turkeys, is so good for preschoolers! It’s actually a prereading skill. Practicing visual discrimination helps children prepare for discriminating the differences among letters, like a, c, and g, or upper case e and f.
Noticing the subtle differences in the patterns on the turkeys works visual discrimination skills in a fun way.
Turkey Number Sequencing Puzzles
These turkey themed number sequencing puzzles have cute holiday scenes. Not only are they puzzles, but they also teach number sequencing and counting skills, which is so important for preschool and kindergarten.
Turkey Race to the Top
I love race to the top games. Without even knowing it, preschoolers are working on visual discrimination skills as well as early graphing skills. This particular game is a little different in that it has a “wild” space on the dice, where the player gets to choose where to put the counter.
Sometimes preschoolers will add a counter to the column that is “winning”. Sometimes they will add it to a random space. This choice opens up a lot of discussion about graphing.
Turkey Colors Picture Book and Student Booklet
This is a two for one deal! I had such a great response from my Pumpkin Colors Picture Book and Student Booklet, that I had to make a turkey book for this activity pack. Students can practice color recognition and pre-reading skills with the predictable text of the picture book, and then practice writing skills in the student booklet.
