Importance of Lesson Plans for Preschool

Early childhood education is crucial for a child’s lifelong learning. While preschool may not have the same structured learning environment as elementary school, it lays the foundation for future academic success. This is achieved by carefully designing activities and projects that target specific skills and nurture a curiosity about the world.

Preschool lesson plans serve a dual purpose. First, they act as a roadmap, outlining the planned activities and learning objectives for the day. This ensures that the chosen activities are age-appropriate and effectively promote development.

Second, lesson plans are valuable tools for self-reflection and improvement. After each lesson, you can analyze what worked well and could be improved. This ongoing evaluation allows you to tailor future lessons to meet your students’ specific needs better.

Remember that there is no perfect lesson plan. Children’s needs and interests can be unpredictable. Thus, it is important to remain flexible and adjust lesson plans, as needed- even right in the moment! That is part of what teaching is all about, observing and meeting your children’s needs…right where they are at! This is also why it is important to have a variety of lesson plans and ideas in our wheelhouses.

How to Write Lesson Plans for Preschool

Preschool lesson plans are a vital part of running a successful classroom. Well-written lesson plans help keep your instruction organized, focused, specific and fun!

Here’s a guide on how to create effective preschool lesson plans:

  1. Set Your Learning Objective(s)
    • Identify what you specifically want the children to learn from the lesson and plan it based upon specific goals.
  2. Select Lesson Materials
    • Determine what materials are needed for the lesson. Make sure they’re safe, age-appropriate, and easy to find and manage.
  3. Outline Your Lesson Procedures
    • Divide your lesson into different components such as: a hook/ introduction, main activity, group work, and independent practice.
  4. Assessment
    • Check if you’ve reached your goals for the lesson by watching how the children are doing and asking questions to see if they have any trouble understanding or learning.
  5. Reflection
    • Think about the lesson you taught. Write down what went well and what could be better. This self-assessment will guide you in planning future lessons and making changes to your teaching materials or procedures.
