Preschool Curriculum Ideas

Using themes to guide your curriculum can simplify planning and help ensure a balanced mix of developmental skills. Here’s a breakdown using Ocean Week as an example:

  • Literacy:
Read ocean-themed picture books like “Commotion in the Ocean” or “Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea.” Practice vocabulary words such as “octopus,” “coral,” and “wave.” Add themed letter tracing sheets with ocean words or letters hidden in seaweed.
  • Math:
Count fish manipulatives, sort shells by size or color, create AB or ABC patterns using ocean stickers, and graph favorite sea creatures from a class vote.
  • Science:
Explore sink and float experiments using various ocean-related items. Learn about ocean animals and their habitats. Try saltwater vs. freshwater experiments or make a simple ocean-in-a-bottle.
  • Fine Motor:
Use tweezers to pick up and sort mini sea animals, lace cardboard fish with yarn, or squeeze eyedroppers during water play. Offer cutting practice with wave-shaped lines or snipping blue paper for “water.”
  • Sensory:
Set up a sensory bin with blue water beads, plastic sea animals, shells, and scoops. Create a sand and water bin with funnels and measuring cups. Add scented playdough in ocean colors for extra variety.
  • Art:
Paint underwater scenes using sponges, watercolors, or finger paints. Make jellyfish with paper bowls and streamers, or collages with real sand and shell pieces. Offer a stamping activity using sea animal stamps.
  • Dramatic Play:
Transform your dramatic play center into an ocean explorer station, complete with goggles, maps, and stuffed sea animals. Add fishing poles with magnets or nets for pretend fishing. Set up a “beach” with towels, sunglasses, and books.
