Alphabet Matching Cards for Preschool Farm Lesson Plan Activities
Farm animal activities for preschoolers remain one of the most popular preschool themes to study every fall. But it’s not really limited to the fall season. There’s plenty to learn about farming in the spring time, too.
These chicken and egg alphabet matching cards will make a great addition to your lesson plans for farm theme. They teach letter identification skills, letter sounds as well as beginning sounds.
FAQ About Teaching Farm Theme Activities
Farm activities include those involved in rearing livestock and growing crops. A farm is a large piece of land used for such activities. Since many preschoolers have little connection to a real life farm, try to teach preschoolers about farming by sharing pictures of farmland, barns, farm animals, and tractors.
If you live in an area where there is farmland, go on a field trip to a local farm or take a drive to view farms during planting or harvesting seasons.
Toddlers will benefit most from hands-on and sensory based farm activities. Have your toddler use toy tractors to make tracks in paint, or make a “muddy pen” for toy farm animals, or use playdough to make toy farm animal impressions.
Toddlers love to sing and dance, too, so don’t forget circle time activities and gross motor games like Duck, Duck Goose.
Like any other preschool lesson plans, your farm theme lesson plans should include a balance of content areas. Add farm theme science activities like investigating seeds or measuring plant growth. Include farm theme math activities like these farm patterning cards or this corn craft and counting activity.
Of course ideas for a farm theme should also include lots of literacy and sensory activities, too. And don’t forget farm theme art activities!
Don’t Forget Farm Books for Preschool
Having the right farm theme picture books can take your farm animal learning activities to the next level. Picture books help preschoolers make preschool themes more visual. Here are some of our favorite farm theme books for preschoolers.

The Set Up
Print the free farm printable on heavy card stock and laminate, if desired, for added durability. Cut apart the chicken coop mats and then cut apart the alphabet eggs. Place on a tray and invite your preschooler to join you for some alphabet matching activities for preschoolers.
How to Use the ABC Matching Mats
This is a simple but fun farm theme activity for preschool. Once you introduce your preschooler to how to make the matches, he will be able to work on them independently.
Select a chicken coop mat and identify the letter on it. Then, search through the egg letter cards to find the corresponding lower case letter.
These alphabet mats are self checking because each egg also has the beginning sound icon that’s featured in my animal alphabet, which is included in my Daily Lessons in Preschool Literacy Curriculum.
Preschoolers can look at the animal on the egg letter cards, say the name of the animal, identify the beginning sound, and math the lower case letter to the upper case letter on the chicken coop mats.
How to Teach the Alphabet Using Matching Cards
Here are some tips for teaching the alphabet to preschoolers.
- Use these cards in correlation with the letter order offered in my Daily Lessons in Preschool Literacy Curriculum.
- Pull out only the letters in your preschooler’s name.
- Have your preschooler sort all the upper case letters by “straight”, “curved”, and “mixed” letters.
- Go through the egg letter cards and name each alphabet animal and it’s beginning sound.
