Creating playdough that’s safe to eat is important when trying to engage toddlers and preschoolers in playdough sensory play. With a taste-safe playdough recipe, preschool teachers and parents can be worry-free if a little one if still prone to putting things in their mouths.
This Funfetti playdough recipe uses just two ingredients—frosting and powdered sugar—you can easily craft a batch of what some might call Funfetti Playdough. How to Make Playdough Using Frosting
While my favorite way to make this two ingredient edible playdough recipe with with Funfetti frosting, really, you can use any flavor of frosting! Think – strawberry, lemon, chocolate, oreo, caramel – you can make a lot of fun playdough with a can of frosting and some powdered sugar!
Add the frosting to the mixing bowl.
Set the mixer on low speed, and gradually add the powdered sugar, continually scraping the sides of the bowl.
As you work the dough, touch it every now again to test its consistency. If it feels sticky, keep adding more powdered sugar, just a little bit at a time. It will take a lot more powdered sugar than you think, though.
Just keep adding more powdered sugar and slowly mixing it into the dough until the dough reaches the desired consistency.
When you are happy with the feel of the dough, where the consistency is the perfect mix of smooth and malleable, and it’s not sticky at all any more, sprinkle a little powered sugar onto a clean countertop and dump out the dough. Add the sprinkles and knead by hand.
How to Fix Dry Edible Playdough?
Fixing dry playdough that’s edible is a little different than fixing traditional playdough recipes that are dry.
With most edible playdough recipes, it’s pretty hard to make them turn out crumbly and dry. However, if you do find you playdough is too crumbly, just knead in a tiny bit of cooking oil to the dough and it will soften right up.
Do not use water! Adding water to sugar-based doughs like this one will only result in a sticky mess.
How Long Does Funfetti Playdough Last?
Edible playdough will not long as long as traditional playdough recipes, especially after your child has been playing and sculpting the dough. It will last a couple of days, but make sure your little one washes their hands before and after use, and discourage tasting the dough during repeated use.

- Playdough Party Favors
- Package small amounts of playdough in colorful containers for each child to take home as a party favor.
- Playdough Gift Wrapping Fine Motor Station
- Create small “gifts” out of playdough and wrap them with ribbons made from thin playdough strips.
