Number Activities for Preschool Summer Theme
As preschool teachers and parents, we work hard all school year to make sure our preschooler is learning everything she needs before entering kindergarten.
It’s a delicate balance of formal instruction and play. A careful dance between fun and formal.
But all of that is ok. It’s good to have fun number activities for preschoolers as well as number activities that require short snippets of very directed instruction. It’s. both activities that help preschoolers learn to count and recognize numbers, both of which are important before entering kindergarten.
Each year in preschool, it’s my goal for all my preschoolers to know how to rote count to 20 as well as recognize numbers and quantities all the way to twenty. some preschools go all the way to thirty. And there is a private school around the corner from my house that goes to 50 in preschool.
No matter the goals, preschoolers need to know numbers one through ten at the very least. Master, actually.
These summer themes number sequencing puzzles will help with that. Not only do they help preschoolers learn how to identify numbers through ten, but they also learn one to one correspondence in counting, number order, and differences in quantity.

5 Summer Themed Number Activities for Preschoolers
If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you know how I love using one printable for multiple activities. Here are five summer learning activities for preschoolers that you can do with these low-prep number sequencing puzzles.
Put the Puzzles Together
I always have to start with the most obvious. Print the puzzles out, laminate for added durability, and then cut apart into the puzzle pieces. Now place them on a tray in sets and invite your preschooler join you in putting the puzzles together.
Unlike other number order puzzles, these puzzles do not create am overall picture that can be used to self-check. Rather these puzzles require preschoolers to read the number on each piece and then count the number on the piece, too. If the puzzle is put together correctly, the pictures on the puzzle will look like a staircase as the number increase.
Put the Puzzles Together in Reverse Order
We focus a lot on teaching preschoolers to count from 1-10, but it is equally important for preschoolers too understand that numbers 10-1 decrease in quantity. Challenge your preschooler to put together the puzzles starting at ten and working down to one. If done correctly, the pictures on the puzzle will still create a staircase, just going down instead of up.
Practice One to One Correspondence with these Puzzles
Another number activity for preschoolers is to practice extra one to one correspondence. That’s the ability to match up an item for each number counted. You can do that with these puzzles like this:
- Read the number. (Or tell you preschooler the number if they do not know it).
- Count the number of ocean animals the strip. Point to each animal as it is counted.
- Count again, adding a button on. top of each animal as it is counted.
Adding the buttons forces preschoolers to practice counting just one more time.
Use the Number Puzzles to Teach Measurement
These number puzzles can also be used as a measurement tool. Supply a number of objects no longer that eight inches and set them out for your preschooler. Ask your preschooler to select an object and find the puzzle piece with the picture height that matches.
For example, if you preschooler selects a spoon from the items you set out, he would then match the spoon with the puzzles strip that matches. Place the end of the spoon at the line above the number to see. Then say, “This spoon is {six} fish tall.”
Mix up the Puzzles and Sort the Numbers
Another fun number activity using these puzzles is to mix up all the sets and then sort them by number. After they are all sorted, have your preschooler lay out the strips next to each other so she can see that the number ten, for example, is always the same. This is good quantification practice for preschoolers.
