How to Make Gold Playdough Recipe
This playdough recipe doesn’t call for any salt and uses cornstarch along with flour, making it silky smooth and buttery soft.
Pour the water and lemon juice into a microwave-safe 2-cup measuring cup that is also heatproof. Warm it in the microwave until it reaches a near-boiling point, which should take roughly two to three minutes.
Meanwhile, add the flour and cornstarch in a glass mixing bowl and whisk together. Add in the gold mica powder or loose gold eyeshadow. (You will get a better and stronger shimmer with gold mica powder). Whisk again.
Color with yellow and orange food coloring as desired. I did about four drops of yellow. Whisk in the oil while you’re at it.
Carefully, pour the hot water mixture into the flour mixture and mix well with a wooden paddle. Once it has formed a dough like consistency, dump it out onto the counter top and allow to cool for ten minutes. Then knead well.
While kneading, add in chunky glitter as desired. In my opinion, the more the better!
Now, invite your preschooler to come and play with the gold playdough!
Super Soft Playdough Recipe
This has to be the softest playdough recipe ever! Reason being is two-fold.
- It does not call for salt, which can try out the hands.
- It replaces some of the flour with cornstarch.
How to Keep Playdough Soft
To keep playdough soft and pliable for extended use, it’s important to store it properly after each play session.
- Make sure that all air is squeezed out of the playdough before sealing it tightly in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag.
- Store the container in a cool, dry place away.
- Adding a few drops of water to the playdough and kneading it thoroughly can also help restore moisture and prevent it from drying out.
- Use playdough on clean surfaces and be sure to wash hands before use.
How Long with Salt-Free Playdough Last?
Salt acts as a natural preservative in playdough, helping to prevent mold and bacterial growth, thereby extending its shelf life. Without salt, homemade playdough won’t last as long because it lacks this preservative effect.
Typically, salt-free playdough can last for about 1 to 2 weeks when stored properly in an airtight container and kept in a cool, dry place.
You can extend the life of this playdough by making sure your preschoolers wash and dry their hands before using, and make sure all the playdough surfaces and tools are clean as well.

On the site it says to add 2 cups of water. When I did that, it was way too runny. Is there a typo? Thanks!
Hi Karen, thanks for asking! I think that maybe the water wasn’t warmed enough. It has to be bear boiling. What is very best is if the water is just starting to bubble around the edges. If you have other playdough questions, you can read this post:
