Dinosaur Theme Preschool Lesson Plans
What preschooler doesn’t love learning about dinosaurs? From the ferocious Tyrannosaurus Rex to the itty bitty Mircorapter, a dinosaur theme is interesting to nearly all preschoolers. Today I’m offering to you my month-long dinosaur theme lesson plans. My preschoolers loved them, and I’m sure your preschooler will too!
Dinosaur Theme Preschool Lesson Plans
Boys and girls alike enjoy studying dinosaurs, and it’s also one of my favorites to teach. There are so many fun directions to take a dinosaur theme. But, instead of focusing on individual dinosaurs, I taught my preschoolers more about the science side of dinosaurs: their physical attributes, how they protect themselves, what it’s like to be a paleontologist, and so much more!
What’s Included
This dinosaur-themed unit is designed specifically for preschool and pre-kindergarten students! It can even be scaffolded for toddlers (my 2’s class loves the songs and art!) and would be a great compliment to kindergarten intervention.

A CLOSER LOOK AT SOME OF THE DINOSAUR ACTIVITIES
Dinosaur Visual Discrimination Game
Preschoolers learn to look for specific attributes that make each dinosaur unique as they try to make matches among a large set of dinosaurs. These kind of visual discrimination games are good for preschoolers as they help preschoolers notice differences that are important when learning letters and numbers.
Dinosaur Alphabet Sequencing Puzzles
My preschoolers love puzzles, a have an added bonus because it challenges preschoolers to sequence the letters of the alphabet. It’s great reinforcement for preschoolers who already know their letters, but also a great way to teach new letters since the puzzles can be completed by matching the pictures, too. There are eight different puzzles included.
Dinosaur Egg Addition Cards
This is one of my favorite math activities offered in this set of lesson plans because it is such a fun and effective way to introduce preschoolers to addition concepts. For preschoolers who really struggle with basic addition concepts, they can add the first set of eggs in one color of dinosaur, and then add the second set in a different color.
Dinosaur Sorting Activities
By this time of year, my preschoolers are pretty darn good at color sorting, so I wanted to create a sorting activity that would challenge them more. This one does it! Students sort dinosaurs according to their physical attributes. Can they fly? Do they have horns? Do they have claws? What about their skin? And of course, my preschoolers had to discuss and decide what to do when a dinosaur fit into more than one category, too!
Other Dinosaur Themed Activities Included
There are simply too many activities in these preschool lesson plans to list them all in one post. Included are four new dinosaur songs written by myself, circle time printables, ideas for centers, and easy and inexpensive science and art activities. My preschoolers are loving the fine and gross motor activities, too!
These lesson plans are all-inclusive.
You can pick and choose what you would like to teach from them, or you can follow them step-by-step. I also designed the activities to reuse the same printables, limiting the amount of printing needed and laminating needed.
Recommended Books About Dinosaurs
As with all my lesson plans sets, they are even better when supported by excellent children’s literature. Here are our favorite dinosaur picture books.
