THESE Food & Nutrition Preschool Centers WILL HELP PRESCHOOLERS DEVELOP the following skills:

  • number sense
  • algebra
  • geometry
  • measurement
  • data analysis and probability
  • alphabetic knowledge
  • phonological awareness
  • phonemic awareness
  • letter formation
  • phonics

This pack of printable centers feature a food and nutrition theme. Activities teach about the five different food groups, as well as healthy versus sometimes (junk) foods. And with so many early learning concepts included, these preschool centers will reach a wide range of skill sets in your classroom.

This pack includes over 96 pages of printable food and nutrition preschool centers. Activities are as follows:

Food & Nutrition Math Activities

  • Fruit and Vegetable Counting Cards (Number Sense) – Count the number of fruits or vegetables at the top of each card. Trace the numeral on the left of the card. Finally, use counters to count out the corresponding number on the ten frame.
  • Fruit and Vegetable Pattern Block Mats (Geometry) – Name the fruit or vegetable on the mat. Count out the number of each shape needed to complete the pattern block puzzle. Complete the puzzle with pattern blocks and then trace the written word at the bottom of the mat.
  • Food Group Sorting and Matching (Algebra)  – Cut apart the food group sorting cards and set aside in piles. Match the sorting cards to the corresponding picture on each mat.
  • Fruit and Vegetable Measuring Cards (Measurement) – Use a non-standard unit to measure the length or width of each fruit or vegetable. Non-standard units can be snap cubes, pom poms, pink erasers, buttons, transparent counters, etc.
  • Healthy vs Sometimes Foods Race to the Top (Data Analysis) – Cut out the dice and assemble with clear tape. Roll the dice and place a counter in the corresponding space on the graph. The first column completed wins the race. (***Disclaimer – In this activity fruits and vegetables are considered healthy foods that can be eaten at any time. The cinnamon roll and cupcakes are “sometimes” foods. They are not junk food or bad foods, but something that can be indulged in sometimes. This helps alleviate some stress children can feel because it eliminates good versus bad foods).
  • Fruit and Vegetable Pattern Cards (Algebra) – Cut apart the pattern strips and organize by pattern type. Cut apart the pattern answer cards and set in a pile. Use the pattern answer cards to complete each pattern strip. Alternatively, fruit and vegetable counters can be used to complete each pattern. You can find them here: Fruit Counters and Vegetable Counters

Food & Nutrition Literacy Activities

  • Lemonade Stand Letter Matching (Alphabet Knowledge) – Match the lower case letter on each lemon slice to the lemonade stand with the corresponding upper case letter.
  • Kitchen Items Tracing Words (Letter Formation) – Cut apart the tracing cards and place in a dry erase pouch. Use a dry erase marker to trace over each word.
  • Fill the Apple Bucket with Rhyming Words (Phonological Awareness)  – Cut apart the apple cards and add the apples to the bucket with the corresponding rhyme.
  • Fill the Syllable Jars (Phonological Awareness) – Cut apart the syllable jars and the food cards. Place the food cards in a pile and sort onto the jar mats according to the number of syllables in each food word.
  • On Top of Spaghetti Beginning Sounds Matching (Phonemic Awareness) – Cut apart the meatball cards and place in a pile. Place the letter cards in a separate pile. Draw a letter card and place it on the mat. Add the corresponding beginning sound meatballs. (To simplify, place a select group of letters and matching beginning sounds and have your student work with only a few letters and sounds at once, rather than the entire alphabet).
  • Fruit and Vegetable Word Building (Phonemic Awareness) – Cut apart the word building cards. Use the provided letter cards to spell out the word on each card.  Alternatively, magnetic letter manipulatives can be used. Find matching letter manipulatives here: Magnetic Letter Manipulatives
